Jeremy Tavare

Jeremy Tavare holds a Personal Chair at the University of Bristol's Department of Biochemistry. Prior to this he was a Senior Research Fellow, and a MRC (Medical Research Council) Travelling Fellow at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute in Dallas, TX, U.S.A. His academic research interests centre on diabetes and cancer. In particular he is trying to delineate the role of protein kinase B in the mechanism by which insulin stimulates glucose uptake into adipocytes, and also the role of this protein in the development of lung cancer. He has served on various government and charity research committees, most recently as Deputy Chairman of the MRC Physiological Systems and Clinical Sciences Board, and is currently Chairman of the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) Scientific Advisory Committee. He is married to a sports physician GP, and has three sons.
