Melanie started her scientific career as an undergraduate in Biochemistry at Imperial College, London and moved to the ICRF for her Ph.D., studying the action of oncogenes. After several years of postdoctoral research at The Biomedical Research Centre, University of British Columbia, in Vancouver, Canada, Melanie was appointed to a Lecturership in the Department of Pharmacy and Pharmacology, University of Bath, where she is now Professor of Molecular Signalling and co-Director of the University's Centre for Regenerative Medicine. Between 2003 and 2006 she was the recipient of a BBSRC Research Development Fellowship and currently serves on BBSRC Grant Committee D. She has been active in the Biochemical Society, as a member, then chair, of the Signal Transduction theme panel. Her current research focuses on investigating the coupling of cytokine-activated signalling pathways to functional responses and those regulating self-renewal and differentiation of embryonic stem cells are of particular interest.
